Pharmaceutical Homework Activity
for Group Enrichment

Your mission, Ms./Mr. Phelps, should you decide to accept it, is to use the resources of the World Wide Web (WWW) in an innovative fashion to advance the knowledge base of the Gen 308/508X team. We are engaged in an uphill battle against the forces of ignorance. We need your specific skills to gain the upper hand against this relentless tide of mediocrity led by the APathy in Education Corporation(APE). Your task is to break into the APE mainframe and erase the many megabytes of mediocre memory and replace it with valuable information collected from the Internet. This information will then be available to all the other members of the team for their cyber-edification.

PHAGE Instructions

Part 1.

Pick a biotechnology-derived pharmaceutical product from the list of FDA-Approved Biopharmaceutical Drugs and Vaccines at the Access Excellence WWW site. You may investigate any one that interests you for whatever reason. Perhaps a relative or a student you know is affected by one of these conditions. Maybe you read about it in a magazine or saw it featured on a television program. The choice is yours. Only one student will write about one particular drug or vaccine. If two or more students want to write about one particular product, it will be decided by FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED! To reserve a topic, e-mail Tom Ingebritsen .

Once you have decided, you need to research the drug and write a report (at least 300 words) about your findings. You may use the information from Chapter 6 in the textbook as background but your report should focus on some aspect of the drug and its use that is not covered in the textbook. Be sure to include citations in the text and a list of references at the end of your report.

Resources You Can Use:

 1. Hypertext links in the slides from the Pharmaceutical Products Lecture - Note that the link here is currently to a version of the lecture without the audio. An audio version of the lecture will be available later.
 2. Wonderful Web Site Links (see especially those for Chapter 6)
 3. Web Searching

Part 2.

As you search the web for information about your pharmaceutical product, you will undoubtedly come across useful WWW sites that you will want to share with the group. We want you to compose a list of the top three WWW sites you found during your research. Note: Please do not include sites that are already listed in the Wonderful Web Sites for Chapter 6 or in the slides from the Pharmaceutical Products Lecture. For each site, please include a brief description of the web site. You have already seen examples of descriptions at the end of each online chapter. Also include the URL for the site (e.g http://www.gene.com/medicines/protropin) so others can get there. Please give each site a letter a star (*) rating; from 5 stars (***** the best) to 1 star (* the worst). For instance, I would probably give the Eli Lilly Diabetes site a *****. I think it's a terrific resource for teachers, students, and the general public. Of course, these ratings are subjective and others might disagree. But they're just to give the others in the class a general idea of what to expect from a site.

Submitting Report and Grading

Write your report as you normally would on a word processor.

Go to the ClassNet Discussion Forum, to the topic titled "PHAGE Assignment (Module 4)." Post a new message, just as you would for the Biotechnology in the News Assignment. For the body of your message, cut and paste your report from your word processor into the body of the message.

Modify your message with the code
at the end of each paragraph, and
to indicate a line break. Then preview and post your message just as you would for the Biotechnology in the News Assignment.

Reply to others' reports for extra credit! Start up discussions, debates, and interaction....the free exchange of information is the heart of the scientific enterprise!
