Course Description |
Dates: August 25 - Dec. 19
This is a three credit course that can be taken for undergraduate (Gen 308) or graduate credit (Gen 508). Those taking the course for graduate credit must also complete a creative component. The course will cover scientific principles and techniques in biotechnology; products and applications in agriculture, food and human health; and ethical, legal and social implications of biotechnology. All course materials except the textbook can be accessed with a personal computer (PC or Mac) via the World Wide Web. Your internet provider should support TCP/IP software and the speed of your connection should be at least 28.8 Kbps.
Modular Structure
Students will complete four of the five modules. All students complete Modules 1-3. Students choose either Module 4 or Module 5.
Modules consist of on-line lectures, reading from the textbook or on-line biotechnology resources, and homework assignments. There will be an exam at the end of each module. See the course calendar for nominal start dates for each module and for the due dates for module assignments and module exams.
All course materials except the textbook are available on-line 24 hrs/day.
Work within modules is self-paced. You choose the order in which the module
components are completed. Each module has a nominal starting date and a deadline
for completing assignments and the exam associated with each module. You may
work ahead in the modules. The exception to this is Module 3 where you will
be working with one or two other students on several of the assignments.

Exams |
There will be an exam at the end of each Module. All exams will be taken on-line using WebCT. You should allow 60-120 minutes to take the test. The deadline for completing each exam is given in the Syllabus.
How To Take An Exam
Logon to WebCT. On the course homepage, click on the "Evaluation Tools" link. On the "Evaluation Tools" page click on the "Exams" link. On the "Exams" page click on the link to the exam you want to take. You will then be prompted to enter a password. The proctor will enter this password so you can access the exam. When you are finished with the test click on the "Finish" button.
On-campus students
Exams will be taken in the the Science II microcomputer lab (room 241 Science II). When you enter the room ask the lab monitor who the Project BIO proctor is. You will need to show the proctor a picture ID and then If it is impossible for you to take an exam during one of the regularly scheduled exam periods, contact the instructor for the unit to make alternate arrangements.
Off-campus students
You must identify a proctor and have that individual complete the Proctor Agreement
Form. You need to do this at least a week before you take your first exam so
we can send your proctor information needed about the exam. Your proctor must
be physically present when you take the exam. This individual will verify your
identity and monitor the exam. The exams will be given on-line, so you will
need to be at a computer that is connected to the internet.
