Welcome to Gen 308/508! This is a three credit course that can be taken for undergraduate (Gen 308) or graduate credit (Gen 508). Those taking the course for graduate credit must also complete a creative component.
The course will cover scientific principles and techniques in biotechnology; products and applications in agriculture, food and human health; and ethical, legal and social implications of biotechnology. The course will be conducted entirely on-line and all course materials except the textbook can be accessed with a personal computer (PC or Mac) via the World Wide Web.

Modular Structure.

The course consists of 5 modules.

  • Module 1 - Principles of Molecular Biology
  • Module 2 - Genetic Engineering
  • Module 3 - Genetic Diseases
  • Module 4 - Agriculture and Food
  • Module 5 - Human Genome Project

Students complete four of the five modules. All students complete Modules 1-3. Students choose either Module 4 or Module 5 to complete the course.
