Aesculus hippocastanum (Horse chestnut): Fruit
The fruit is a 1- to 3-seeded, capsule, 2 inches in diameter, borne in drooping clusters and ripening in September and October. The capsule turns from green to brown, is thick and leathery and bears pointed spines. The nutlike seeds are a dark, shiny brown with a light spot (hilum) and are poisonous to humans.
