Habitat: This tree is the most adaptable
and pollution-tolerant tree available, becoming a pest in some areas because
it propagates so readily from seed and by root suckers. In Washington D.C.
there was once an ordinance prohibiting the planting of this tree within
the city limits. It will grow in sterile soils and can even withstand its
root area being submerged in salt water.
Diseases: This species is not susceptible
to any serious diseases or insect pests and will withstand neglect. |
Distribution: The tree-of-heaven is native to
China and was introduced to the US in 1784. Hardy to zone 4, it is widely
cultivated in Iowa urban areas and often escapes to grow on vacant lots
and in waste areas. |
