Ailanthus altissima (Tree-of-heaven): Uses

Wood: The wood is soft and weak and therefore commercially unimportant.

Horticulture: The wood is weak and brittle and easily damaged in storms, the leaves produce very little fall color and the prolific seed reproduction and root suckering make this a high-maintenance tree.

Where a semi-tropical effect is required, however, female trees are generally planted as the male flowers produce an unpleasant odor. Cultivars include 'Erythrocarpa,' with red fruits; 'Metro,' a male clone with a confined crown; and 'Pendulifolia,' with erect branches and pendulous leaves.
