Habitat: The winged spindle
tree adapts well to a variety of soils except those which are constantly
wet. The root system is surface and fibrous and, although preferring well-drained
soils, this plant will show stress in droughty conditions. Mulching is recommended
in hot, dry weather. The photograph shows the leaf and flowers of the wahoo
(E. atropurpureus), which is native throughout Iowa in low-lying
areas near woods and in moist, open woods.
Diseases: No serious diseases or pests are
a problem. This species is immune to scale insects which attack and damage
other euonymous. |
Distribution: Native to northeast Asia, this
species was introduced into the US in 1860. It is hardy in the US from zones
4 to 8 . |
