Magnolia acuminata (Cucumber tree) Magnoliaceae (Magnolia family)

Growing on the lawn southeast of Music Hall, near the road, this large-leafed tree is shown photographed here in early spring.

This magnolia is native to the forests of the eastern US from western New York to Louisiana, but is not abundant in its range. It is found on rich, mesic slopes, along stream banks and in protected valleys. It prefers deep, slightly acid, well-drained, moist soil. It grows well on the calcareous soils of the Midwest. It is hardy and tolerates full sun or partial shade, but cannot withstand extreme drought or very wet soils. This is a good specimen tree for large areas and naturalized sites.
