Sophora japonica (Japanese pagoda tree) Fabaceae (Bean family)

A group of  Japanese pagoda trees flower July into August east of Pearson Hall.

The Japanese pagoda tree is a wide-branching, highly ornamental tree with a rounded crown. This species is one of the last of the larger trees to flower in the north, producing large, upright panicles of mildly fragrant, creamy-white, pea-like flowers. This valuable ornamental is not used in the urban landscape as often as it ought to be. It is tolerant of pollution and, casts a light shade, allowing turf grasses to grow up to the trunk.
