Taxus sp. (Yew) Taxaceae (Yew family)

Large, rounded, evergreen shrubs southeast of Bessey Hall (east of the Horticulture building).

Yews are native throughout most of the Northern Hemisphere, and have been cultivated in Europe and Britain for centuries. The yews are a small genus of 6 to 8 species of compact, multistemmed, long-lived, evergreen trees and shrubs. There is a wide variety in habit, size, growth rate and texture among the cultivars. Year-round, yews have high quality, dark green foliage. They are popular because they have a dense, compact appearance, are easy to transplant, and tolerate heavy pruning and urban pollution (except road salt).
